Owari satsuma is the mandarin kids (and HOA neighbors) love — seedless, slips from the peel, and sweet early-winter fruit. It is the hardiest of the common mandarins, giving Calabasas foothill yards a little more frost buffer than finicky late cultivars.
- Self-fertile; may seed if cross-pollinated by nearby citrus
- Early-season ripening; bright orange, tender flesh
- Zones 8–11; protect below 28°F
- Mature ~10–15 ft in ground; 6–8 ft in pots
Season extender: Pair with Gold Nugget (late) for months of homegrown mandarins. Fall planting is ideal while soil is warm.
